Austin-based Machinima studio Roosterteeth may be best known for its long running web series Red Vs. Blue, which is now in its 10th season, but in recent years the company has begun hosting an expo for gamers and internet personalities. The expo has become a yearly meetup for fans, and also a local showcase for both Roosterteeth and other internet companies. This week, the company has announced that Microsoft’s highly anticipated Halo 4 will be playable at the two day event beginning July 7th in Austin – a public first for the upcoming title. The expo will feature exhibitions from companies like Penny Arcade, Twisted Pixel, and Robot Entertainment, as well as a keynote speech from YouTube sensation Freddie Wong. The company sprang up between friends who worked together at a tech support call center in Texas. During weekends away from work Burnie Burns, Geoff Ramsey, and Gus Sorola began creating a web series using the original Halo engine in 2002. Roosterteeth was formed soon after, and the company has since turned into a video production house for all kinds of projects.
During last year’s Roostreeth Expo, the company harnessed the number of attendees to create a video for its immersion series, which tasks employees to come up with creative ways to live out video game scenarios in real life. In the “horde mode” scenario, two of the founders were given a healthy supply of Nerf guns and dart ammunition to hold off more than 400 attendees who had been made up to look like zombies. Tickets for the event are still on sale, up to the 22nd of this month, for just under $50 a piece. RTX begins on July 7th, so if you find yourself anywhere near Austin, and video games and zombie roleplay sound right up your alley, don’t miss out on this chance to experience the madness that happens when gaming and internet culture collide.
