International Spotlight: The Tech Startup Scene In Perth, Australia

The startup scene is thriving in Perth, Australia, thanks to a bounty of techie startup groups. Throw in the perfect financial landscape against which would-be entrepreneurs can try their luck, and it’s no small wonder that Perth plays home to a huge number of startups and SMEs. Below is a list of some of the frontrunners in the area. – Student Edge – While not strictly a startup, this site offers great resources for post-graduates looking to begin their journey into business. Founded in 2003 by a group of students, this group offers free access to online student services, such as health, wellbeing, study and career tools. There’s a section devoted to job searching, giving details of full-time, part-time and volunteer vacancies. In addition, the ‘What’s On’ section gives regular details of careers and employment expos for post-graduate professionals looking to expand their knowledge base and skills. There are even pages dedicated to important topics such as Financial Management and Career & Life Decisions. It’s well worth checking out. – HealthEngine is one of those ‘why didn’t I think of that?’ startups. It was founded in 2006 by a group of doctors who became frustrated at how difficult it was for patients to find out about and reach health practitioners around the country. HealthEngine is now Australia’s leading site for finding and booking health appointments, offering more booking times, more practices and more coverage than any of its competitors. HealthEngine is even available as an app, giving people access to doctors and dentists through their phones, wherever they happen to be and at the time that’s most convenient to them. – Insightly offers CRM and project management to small businesses. Part of its attraction is that it takes care of all the IT requirements, including servers, back-ups and security. In addition, it integrates with GoogleApps, MailChimp, LinkedIn and Twitter to deliver a fully comprehensive service that is now used by over 250,000 people in over 100 different countries on a daily basis. – GoPC allows you to replace your IT network with online desktops, file-servers, mail-servers and back-up systems. The software is so simple to use that you can either replace each of your existing IT systems incrementally, or you can simply replace the whole infrastructure in one fell swoop. For small and expanding businesses, this gives the chance for a number of offices to run from one centralized system, improving collaboration and a general awareness of what each part of the business is up to at any given time. – Groupmap may well be one of the most innovative startups that Perth has given rise to in the last few years. Essentially, it’s an online brainstorming tool. By combining the thoughts and views of all the participants, Groupmap gives you a good idea of what everyone’s thinking on both an individual and collective level. This allows for more effective decision-making within a company or can be used for team-building exercises, revealing just what colleagues have in common. Alternatively, it can be used as a virtual springboard through which marketing or product ideas can be developed. Which of these startups do you find most interesting? Any that we’ve missed? Let us know in the comments!
