Edmodo Raises $15 Million to be the Facebook of Education

Social Networking has revolutionized everything from how we connect with friends to how we get our news to how we look for jobs. Now, education startup Edmodo is poised to revolutionize the way teachers connect with students and each other with a $15 million cash infusion from Reid Hoffman and former Facebook executive Matt Cohler. Edmodo, which was started in 2008 by Nic Borg and Jeff O’Hara in Chicago, Illinois, is a secure, Facebook-like social network that allows teachers to connect with students to share content, access homework, and collaborate on assignments. Borg and Hara started Edmodo because schools needed to “evolve the environment to reflect the connected world in which we live.” Edmodo also allows teachers to connect with each other, promoting professional development and communication of best practices. As of this writing, Edmodo has over 4.8 million teachers and students on its network. Image Credit: shinealight
