Inspired by the strong and low-density design of Eiffel Tower, researchers from University of California at Irvine, HRL Laboratories and the California Institute of Technology have developed a metal that is now crowned as the lightest solid in the world.
Constructed out of hair-thin pipes, the dainty “micro-lattice” is 100 times lighter than styrofoam, and consists of 99.99% air.
The research is to be published in the November 18 issue of Science.
