By July 30, 2018

Minneapolis, Minnesota is the king of tech talent, according to the latest survey from CBRE Group Inc.

In the annual poll titled “Scoring Tech Talent in North America 2018,” Minneapolis was noted for jumping ahead of Chicago as the top city in the Midwest to find tech workers.

In terms of overall rankings, Minnesota was ranked 17th in North America, while Chicago was just one spot behind at 18th. Detroit rounds out the top 20.

Other notable inclusions are the fast-rising Cleveland and Columbus tech markets.

Madison, Pittsburgh, and Cleveland were all noted as three of the top 10 fastest growing tech markets in the U.S. or Canada where tech talent growth is accelerating at a fast rate. Madison and Minneapolis were the only two Midwestern cities included in the survey’s top 10 markets for educational attainment rankings. The two cities were also noted for a high concentration of millennial workers.

Minneapolis was given an overall score of 51.25 on the scale that ranked a city’s depth, vitality and attractiveness when it comes to tech jobs. It was noted for having 91,200 tech workers at its disposal, which is 14th among the 50 metro areas included in the survey. That total of tech workforce rose by 11.5 percent between 2012 and 2017.

Of those workers, the vast majority are in computer support with software developers being the second most common job for those in the tech field.

CBRE Group Inc, a real estate firm, cited nearly 6 million workers in both the U.S. and Canada for the latest version of the annual survey.
